The Importance of Quality Backlinks

The word ‘backlinks’ is not new for those who have already kept their feet in the SEO ground. They would have encountered this word for several times. But, for those new to SEO, you might be wondering what backlinks are and what is the importance of it for your website in SEO.

Well, a backlink is a link pointing to your website from another site. It is also known as incoming link or inbound link and their total number refers link popularity of the website. Search engines consider backlink as a vote. More your site receives vote from leading authority sites, more it will gain a trust rank.

Today, backlinks are considered as one of the most important part in SEO because there is a greater change that your web pages will be indexed faster by the search engine when you build quality backlinks. Apart from this, it will improve your ranking in SERPs and ultimately boost your web traffic.

Having lots of baclinks is not just enough to achieve higher ranking in SEs. It’s the quality of backlinks that matters. Most of the search engines consider the number of quality backlinks when calculating the relevancy of a website for certain keyword.

You might be thinking, how to know if a backlink is quality or not. So, here are the few factors taken in consideration to determine its quality.

Relevance: A backlink from a website which is related to your industry or deals in the same service or product is far better that a link from unrelated industry. As an example, a web design company linked to by a logo design company’s website worth more than being linked by an online gaming website.

Context: The context and location of baclinks do matter. Contextual link is a link that resides within the content of a website. To have contextual links are more beneficial than having normal ones usually found in the links page or in any other section.

Anchor Text: Anchor text is the text that appears in the link. Besides all the search engines, Google gives much more importance to the anchor text of backlinks. For instance, a link with text “Cheap Web Design Company” is worth more than “Click here”.

Number of outgoing links: You should check number of outgoing links on a web page where your backlink is present. It is not useful to have a link from a web page that contains hundreds of outgoing links. It is better trying to get links from the web page which has less outgoing links (usually 20-30 links).

From the above, I think you have known the importance of quality backlinks and how to evaluate them. Remember, when it comes to backlinks, it is important to consider quality rather than quantity.

  7. Backlinks are popular enough to be mentioned twice. Ensure that the backlinks come from a variety of popular domains that are relevant to your website. Try to get links from all different types of websites (news, blogs, old, new, borrowed and blue (?). OK, maybe forget about the “blue”, but I’m sure you get the idea. If all your backlinks come from one small subsection of the Internet, Google might think that you’re very relevant to that subsection. Or, they might think you’ve using some devious and underhanded technique to get backlinks. All I can say here is “be careful”.
